Other Altrusa DFW Service Projects

Altrusa DFW Scholarships

Each year, Altrusa DFW awards two unique scholarships:

ASTRA- for a graduating CISD senior who has demonstrated excellence as an ASTRA member

Overcoming Adversity- for a graduating CISD senior who has overcome a personal obstacle or adversity in a positive manner.

Southlake Trunk or Treat

Altrusa DFW participates in Southlake Trunk or Treat, an annual event organized by the Southlake Fire Department, that provides a safe place for families to take their children Trick or Treating. Several area businesses and civic groups hand out candy to the children, but Altrusa DFW takes a different approach by handing our books as our “treats.”

Feed Our Kids

For over 15 years, Altrusa DFW has participated in GRACE’s Feed Our Kids program, which provides summer lunches to students who qualify for free or reduced-fee lunches during the school year. Each child receives a main lunch item, fruit, side snack, and drink, donated by Altrusa DFW and their members.

In addition, Altrusa DFW organizes fun activities for the children and distributes books for them to keep.

Young DFW Writers

Each year Altrusa DFW sponsors Young DFW Writers, a program in the DFW Metroplex that encourages literacy through having students compete in slam poetry competitions.

Altrusa DFW participates by sponsoring either venues, mentors, or judges, plus our members serve as judges at some of the competitions.

ASTRA Ability-Service-Training-Responsibility-Achievment

ASTRA is a student community-service program that is sponsored by Altrusa DFW at Carroll Senior High and Carroll High School. With an Altrusa member as their leader, students learn a variety of leadership skills while choosing local service projects in which they would like to participate. ASTRA is a large contributor to Altrusa DFW’s Red Bag Food Drive each year.

Malaika Orphanage (Uganda)

Altrusa DFW sponsors Malaika Orphanage in Uganda, whose mission is to develop, support, and educate underserved youth. Malaika was actually founded by an Altrusa DFW member.

We have funded solar panels for the orphanage, allowing for greater safety and educational opportunities for the students, plus we have subsidized tuition for its students.
